mark vaarwerk uses a drop spindle and heat on thin strips cut from plastic bags to create his line of jewelry. talk about innovation!
” A drop spindle is used to individually hand spin each neck-piece from thin strands of plastic made from ordinary shopping bags. A variety of very simple metal working processes, such as bending, fusing, forging, sawing and soldering are used to create the metal elements which when finished are incorporated into the piece during the spinning process. The rings are formed by winding layers of plastic strips, again sourced from ordinary plastic bags, around a inner silver or gold ring. Heat is then applied, fusing the layers.”
