liz hickok: jello cityscape

liz hickok created a series of san francisco cityscapes using jello. hickok made molds for the jiggly jello using her own scale models.

once cast, she added hand-painted backdrops and dramatic lighting (often from underneath or behind).

hickok photographed and videotaped her work to preserve it and in an unusual twist, the models and molds became part of the art installation.

“The images provide a glimpse of the labor-intensive process involved in making the sculptures and the deceptively strange materials I use, such as balsa wood, silicone rubber, foam core, and feathers.”
