simple really is sublime

a picture is worth a thousand words. and a few pictures? priceless.

paper punch + metal leaf + polymer clay bead = WoNdeRful technique! has this been done before? did i miss this in a book or an article? i love it!

sashetta wrote an informative post on polymerclayfimo. i just wish i knew what it said. because i can’t translate the post, i do not know if she mentions learning this from someone and so if i should be crediting anyone else in addition to sashetta, please let me know. use the pictures in the tutorial as a starting point. you can take this in several different  directions.

    It is GREEK to me!

  2. Sandy says:

Lisa Palvalka used punches with baked polymer clay sheets. It was on a Carol Cuval episode.

hi sandy – i know that people have been using the paper punches with sheets of baked clay, but i haven’t seen anyone use the punches with silver leaf – i think it adds a special touch and room for lots of experimentation!

  4. Nadja says:

Cool! I tried a puncher on baked clay sheets but the foil thing is very interesting and new to me. I googeld for “translate russian” and used one of the tools (http://www.online-translator.com/text.asp#tr_form). It is still not clear to me but I think she does not mention to have learned the technique from someone else, she seems to have found it by herself.

I have seen a glass bead maker use a paper punch on metal leaves. I am fuzzy on excactly when or where I saw it but it was in a magazine, maybe Step by Step Beads. The article was published around 2005.

  6. Jeanne Rhea says:

Alan Vernall has done a lot with paper punches. I don’t remember exactly his technique. I esp. like them with the thin metal sheets and then used on clay. So this metallic look is another technique.

hello Susan. Sashetta wrote it was spontaneous idea (idea fix) – use paper punch for silver leaf and polymerclay. and she immediately tried to do it. You know how it is when people look to all kind of things and thinking – can i use it for ….? It is her own experiment , not learned from someone

  8. susan lomuto rose says:

thanks for letting us know tin liva! it is a simple idea with so many exciting possibilities. many thanks to sashetta for sharing it with us.

  9. Trina Williams says:

I don’t know who first used the punches but I did several pieces about 5 or 6 years ago. And here is a heads up on punches. At CHA this year Fiskars introduced some new punches with lever action handles that allow you to see what you are punching out. The large Joann stores carry them.

  10. susan lomuto rose says:

thanks for the heads up about the new punches trina. i ‘ve seen a few different things done with punches over the years, but i don’t recall seeing anyone use the punches on silver leaf. it is this use of the leaf instead of the clay that intrigues me.

  11. sashetta says:

    sorry for my bad english
i like to work with silver leaf
and i’m loking for new applications for this
it there was one of my ideas as it to use

  12. susan lomuto rose says:

sashetta thanks so much for popping in and letting us know that you discovered this technique yourself. you have opened up a new direction for using paper punches with polymer clay and i can’t wait to see how other pc artists interpret your tip!

The first one I saw using this tecnique was Nan Roche(2002?) on her video:
    http://www.abbadabbavideo.com/NanRoche/nrpages/nan.html
after that I saw on Debbie Jackson’s book”polymer clay Jewelry” pages 20n21 how to laminate a mettalic leaf using TLS…a month ago I saw it again on Donna Kato tutorial ” Layered Dichroic Effects”….just my 2cents.
congratulations for your PC blog…it really rocks…luv it!

  14. Susan Lomuto says:

hi paulo – thanks for mentioning nan, debbie and donna – yes, laminating silver and gold leaf has been around for a number of years – i think what’s different here is that she uses a paper punch to make shapes with the leaf and uses both the shape and the negative space left on the sheet. very cool!

and thanks for your kind words about polymerclaynotes – glad you are enjoying it!

  15. paulo guimaraes says:

sorry Susan…I made a mistake mixing those two procedures…What I’d like to say is on that video Nan Roche uses a paper punch to make shapes using positive&negative ones on her project…but she doesn’t laminate them with TLS before cutting them…she in fact makes a 3 layer paper “sandwitch”…(tracing paper(which comes with the foil)+foil+regular printing white paper)…so its more easy to cut& handle the thin foil over clay surface…first peeling the regular white paper layer e sticking the foil on clay and at last peeling the tracing paper from the foil sticked on clay.
Sorry again if I was not clear but English is not my native language.
    best,
    paulo
