tatting shuttles

tatting: handmade lace created by looping and knotting a single strand of heavy-duty thread on a shuttle.

the art of making lace with a small hand-held shuttle has been handed down from grandmother to granddaughter for many generations. i have posted about tatting before, but never about the tool used to make the delicate lace.

full time ceramic artist sherry pence is also an avid tatter and shuttle collector. she found a way to combine her passions by making one of a kind, ceramic tatting shuttles. i came across these miniature work of art shuttles on etsy and then went off on a whirlwind tour, researching tatting. tatting has a very large following with a strong online presence, similar to our own beloved community. shuttles made of metal, plastic, ivory and a variety of other materials, are widely collected. i even found brass shuttles covered with polymer clay. and what about this jewelry made with tatting shuttles – how cool is that? another niche market.

pence says she is the only person in the world making ceramic tatting shuttles. i think hers are world class.

This was interesting to see. I do not know how to tat, but I have been wearing my grandmother’s shuttle, as a pin, since the late 90’s.

what a lovely sentiment beth. i really like the idea of the shuttle as jewelry, but wearing one that was used by a loved one to make beautiful handiwork adds another layer of meaning. thanks so much for sharing.
