norma minkowitz: the body as landscape

Sign up here to receive the DAM newsletter.

to begin one of her fiber sculptures, norma minkowitz crochets the silky outline of a human torso onto a mannequin, stiffens the web-like structure and then cuts it from the form. once the sculpture takes shape, she often combines the torso with plant roots in her attempt to explore the powerful issues of confinement and boundaries.

ultimately, the holes in the sculptures are as important as the fibers that barely hold the form together. all art is open to interpretation. take a look at the haunting figures. i think minkowitz successfully elevates the housewifery-craft of crochet to fine art. what do you think?
