san francisco artists laura blacona and alberto toscano have been creating functional polymer clay art for more than a decade. the photos on their website show a glimpse of the production process and though they utilize mostly canes in their switchplates, salt and pepper shakers, the pair view their work as a departure from the more conventional millefiori technique, describing it instead as ‘painting with clay’.
the polymer-on-metal switchplates glow in the dark and are made in a range of custom blended colors. blacona and toscano sell their work through large and small venues and art museums. you can purchase the switchplates here.
