ferrofluid is a liquid that becomes polarized when surrounded by a magnetic field. artists sachiko kodama and yasushi miyajima placed their majestic sculpture on a plate that holds ferrofluid and then set the piece to tetsuhide hidaka’s music, which plays a prominent role in ‘morpho towers – two standing spirals’. the sculptures are linked to move synthetically to the music and when there is no sound, the fluid falls down into the plate.

if no magnetic field is present, we see two simple spiral shapes created with an electromagnet and a sculpted iron core. but my-oh-my, when the magnetic field around the sculpture is strengthened, the spirals morph into a variety of fragmented shapes that rotate around the structure.
“As there are two towers in the installation, complicated expressions of surfaces become possible. Each tower’s surface pulsates, like one creature calling to the other.Fluid moves synthetically with the music, as if it breathes, and the condition of the fluid’s surface emerges as autonomous and complex.”
