when i first came across lily yung’s work i was intrigued with her use of die-cuts and non-precious materials (plastic sheet and felt). the jewelry is bold – meant for women who are not afraid to be daring; the felt die-cut wall pieces – equally bold – make a colorful statement for those of us who don’t want to wear it, but love the concept.
further exploration of this innovative artist revealed that a research grant has allowed her to collaborate with the national research council of integrated manufacturing technologies institute (london, ontario). using computer aided design and manufacturing tools, yung is exploring the possibility of developing a system that allows mass customization while preserving uniqueness.
morphogenesis is an exciting project. the pictures below show the computer rendering of a necklace and the actual work, crafted from resin.
my favorite? this piece created with plaster powder and cyanoacrylate. yung’s work is on the cutting edge. she’s on my ‘watch list’.
