Virginia Gardner created the mosaic love seat pictured below to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the C’ville Arts artists cooperative. A real estate broker by day, Gardner asked participating artists to contribute personal objects which she incorporated into the “old, comfy sofa” design that is meant to symbolize the cooperative nature of the group (also known as the Transient Crafters).
Gardner stacked and laminated sheets of polystrene foam insulation, forming a block she sculpted and layered with two coats of mesh and concrete before finally setting the mosaic tiles. The whole project took close to three months to complete and Gardner documented her progress here. Fascinating.
