Sarah Rebekah Byrd Mizer’s Growth Chart is filled with private wishes: to be taller; a tomato from grandpa’s garden; a job. The recent Virginia Commonwealth University MFA graduate created her thesis project with glass. Mizer carefully crafted the scripted words and phrases and then mounted them to the wall with pins, relying on spotlights to reflect soft shadows on the glass, making the text visible to the viewer. The installation is quiet and the work “begs the viewer to slow down, whisper and listen”, something we all need to remember during this frenzied holiday season.
Subtle. Muted. Quiet. Powerful.
