I woke to a rain-soaked, foggy February morning in my beloved Hudson Valley today. The kind of gray day that calls for a few head-scratching pictures to help me forget the long list of muddy chores waiting to be tackled as I get ready for Synergy. While I pack, take a look at recent design school graduate Min-Ji Cho’s unlikely pairing of pearls and rubber gloves.
Her use of mirrors as a necklace display is a brilliant touch.
Concentrating on the idea of extending the potential of jewellery in terms of its function and aesthetic, I investigate the use of jewelry not only on the body but also off the body. I believe the decorative character of a piece of jewellery should be enjoyed when it is off the body…which is not possible if it is kept in a jewelry box. In addition, I investigate contemporary notions of preciousness, by exploring and combining materials that represent the extremes of precious and non-precious.
Cho was one of several new graduates who participated in an exhibition at the Kath Libbert Gallery in the UK. You can see all nine artists here.
Off to pack now…I’ll be back later.
