nell devitt’s clay tiles

Nell Devitt’s clay tiles have been commissioned by Macy’s, American Airlines, Fuji Films, Marriott Hotels, Hewlett Packard and many other corporate giants. Devitt uses a slab roller, preferring to make each tile by hand, impressing the clay with templates to make a basic pattern that is then manipulated by incising, carving and scraping the clay. The soothing color palettes, simple shapes and repeating patterns offer inspiration and information.

I make smoke fired, clay tile wall installations. Using abstraction to find the core of an idea, my main focus is to create wall installations of black clay tiles with minimal images that are strong, unique and made within the parameters of a single smoke firing.
