torrens’ dinner knives and driftwood

Living in Northern California makes it easy for Matt Torrens to find the Manzanita driftwood he uses for the life sized animal sculptures that make up his current body of work. Torrens, originally from Canada, started making sculptures using discarded dinner knives before he fell in love with the driftwood native to his adopted home.

I love that the materials I use go unnoticed by the everyday eye. They are overlooked and discarded, with no other thought given to them. It is through these unique pieces that I am able to materialize one moment of my imagination.

Wow. Those are incredible. The wood ones look like they grew right up out of the ground.
