desiree palmen’s disappearing act

Dutch Artist Desiree Palmen makes a compelling statement about the use of ‘Big Brother’ surveillance with these unusual photographs. Palmen takes several photographs of a setting that suits her – a library bookshelf, street, curved staircase. She then makes a cotton suit and using the photographs as a reference, hand paints the suit to match the setting. Palmen or a model poses in the painted suit in its matched setting and the artist photographs the scene.

The result suggests that with proper manipulation we can dissolve into our surroundings and protect our privacy.

I’d like people to consider what it means to let the government control our daily lives. When we are controlled we hand over our individual responsibilities to the state. I wanted to make a suit for the non-criminal citizen whose house is being watched 24 hours by street surveillance cameras. I’m also responding to a wish to disappear.
