Former puppet animator Martin Cheek brings his love of characterization to an art form that usually concentrates on pattern. Cheek’s mosaics are alive with color and expression – his adoration for his subjects evident in every picture.
Whereas many mosaicists come to the art via textiles and concentrate on pattern, I am interested in characterisation – so that a mouse isn’t just any old mouse – he’s THAT mouse. If, when you look at him, he looks back at you then I’ve succeeded – simple as that. Why is SIMPLE so DIFFICULT?!

hi susan!

it makes me remember traditional stone mosaic from italia, my grand mother bought a couple of those when she was a young lady, maybe 1940s… tried to find something on the web, but failed! It used different colours of the same stone to make shapes and wrinkles of a face and folds of clothing…
amazing!
this litlle mouse is a pleasure for me!
thank you susan, just ask if you want some pictures!
bye bye
“Why is SIMPLE so DIFFICULT?!”
That’s what I always ask myself!
His work is a feast; thanks for treating us again!
Martin’s mosaics are always a delight to view. I love the expression he is able to give each of his subjects. I’m sure that comes form from his animation background – really being able to catch all those fine details.
Thanks for this report.
