Canadian-born Kristi Malakoff’s desire to bring two dimensional images to life is the motivation behind her unusual art installations, paper cuttings and paper sculptures. For The Glade (detail shown above), Malakoff used 23,000 photographs of flowers to depict a fanciful forest scene. While the flower installations are colorful and easy on the eyes, Resting Swarm, made up of 21,000 photographs of bees, is eerily realistic and off-putting.

The award winning artist’s massive paper cuttings and installations are powerful and beautiful, but her work is not limited to large-scale. Taking a knife to postage stamps, she manages to make you believe that the gummed paper objects fly and dance. Malakoff has a keen ability to spin the mundane into compelling stories that leave you wanting more.
