meagan chaney: clay and glass

Meagan Chaney’s unusual pairing of glass and clay in a variety of sculptures, tiles and wall installations have me thinking like Althea Crome - how can we shrink this? I envision All She Wanted, and Untitled (both pictured here), meant for the wall at 30″ x 20″ and 38″ x 28″, made in miniature as brooches. Can powerful statements in a room become powerful statements of personal adornment when made on a different scale? The composition already works, the colors, the materials, the curving lines…will it work as a piece of jewelry? I love the idea – what do you think?

Chaney is already on that path with the earthenware – these sea urchin inspired sculptures are part of a series of successful mini sculptures. Harmony can be defined as the pleasing arrangement of parts or as an internal calm. Overall, I strive to create this feeling of harmony through composition, subject matter, and materials.
Oh, absolutely, those would make fantastic jewelery… in fact, until I read that they were wall pieces, I totally thought they WERE brooches…

Funny you should mention that those pieces reminded you of broaches. At the time those were made, I was actually looking a lot at contemporary jewelry design for inspiration. Your thoughts and observations are right on!

I agree with Sherry! I scan photos first and then go back and read and I did think Meagan’s pieces were brooches at first…and amazing ones at that! And you know, jewelry is really just miniature, wearable sculpture so this makes sense.
I am intrigued by what she has to say about harmony. Heading over to her blog now!
Well, I’m now a fan of Meagan’s work….I, too, thought they were brooches! I agree with Genevieve about jewelry being miniature sculpture…that’s one of the things I love about working with polymer; I can create little mini-sculptures as wearable art…

It is so interesting to me the assumptions we make when dimensions aren’t displayed along with art works. Absolutely these look to be of a much smaller scale!!!
In fact I am challenged to envision them in their actual size although I’m sure they’d be quite stunning in a room as wall jewelry.
