This week has been challenging for me and I’m relieved that it’s Friday. I’m trying to shake up the energy and move it in a different direction. Stephen Rolfe Powell’s edgy, colorful blown glass vessels are exactly what I need this morning, with colors that dazzle, shapes that defy logic and names that tickle the funny bone.

Powell, who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Painting and Ceramics and a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics, became obsessed with glass while in graduate school and he has devoted more than twenty years to studying, teaching and making art with the hot, molten material. A colorist at heart, he says that each time he made the shift to a different medium (painting, ceramics, glass) it was because he wanted to see color in a different way – with glass, he knowingly and successfully “exploits the way light interacts with color”.

WOW! That’s awesome. It’s like tapestries in glass form. Gorgeous!
I love these! His names just crack me up. Have you seen photos of him blowing them? They’re big, and he stands up on a platform and lets the glass drop down into the form to get those long necks. Just amazing!
Absolutely Gorgeous! I am amazed and in awe!
These are some of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. And, yes, the names are great! Seems he had fun coming up with them..
Oh, and his use of color!..wow. Thanks, Susan
Great glass works! Would love to learn this process. Awesome.
I really love your work!
The organic shapes, are so fluid and beautiful.
the use of colour is very exciting and daring in a way, but they are stunning in their use and in the translusency which makes them glow!
Your work is so inspriational!
many thanks
