The adobe brick architecture, pottery and landscapes of Charissa Brock’s New Mexico childhood were the beginning of her inspiration. As she traveled she added the landscapes, cultural riches and myths of other lands. When she discovered bamboo as an art material ten years ago while studying for her Master of Fine Arts degree at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, she realized that the renewable resource could help her “incorporate a continuous narrative of my own internal culture, one that includes all that I am exposed to.”

Referencing aspects of objects from the past and forms from nature through knots, interwoven lines, and stacking systems, I am creating a story in hopes of calling to mind the story in us all.
Brock expertly combines the bamboo with fused glass petals, stone, steel and waxed linen thread to create distinctive abstract sculptures that seem to be swaying as they catch a gentle breeze, rocking as they gain momentum and dancing as they draw you in to her story. wow…..wow….wow. I am in love. her stuff is amazing!
This is highly evolved work. As a glass artist and a gardener, I feel a connection to the organic nature presented in these pieces. Very often it is taken forgranted the subtleties of nature presented in peoples interpretation of art. This work exemplifies the very reason for making works of art. An examination of beauty, grace, power and statement of the obvious. Homerun. Keep working. This stuff is visualy stunning.
The use of materials are astounding. The work remind me a bit of Kathleen Dustin, especially the swaying stalks. Art does bring out the best in many artists.
