Carrie Garrott picks perfect petals, dries them carefully, coats them with beeswax and pairs them with sterling silver to create jewelry that boasts a blush of color and the hint of a graceful dance…the kind of dance you would expect as a gentle breeze tosses petals from a flower to the ground.

Delphinium Ring, delphinium blooms, beeswax, sterling silver
I couldn’t find much information about the artist other than what is on her website, which indicates that the Texas resident holds an M.F.A. in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design from Indiana University (2006). Her work is already in the public collection of the Museum of Art and Design in New York. Nice.

Vellum Hydrangea Chain, vellum paper, sterling silver, beeswax
No real petals in the piece above, but her treatment of the vellum paper makes it a spectacular stand-in for the real thing.

Rose Ring, rose petals, sterling silver, beeswax

Fragile Brooch, gerber daisy petals, sterling silver, beeswax

Hydrangea Ring, hydrangea petals, sterling silver, beeswax
The fragility of these pieces is a commentary on the delicate and fleeting nature of life. The manner of these works forces the wearer to take care not to do damage. It is my hope that people will see my work and take it (even on a subconscious level) as a reminder of life’s brevity and preciousness.

Haunting. Beautiful. Satisfying. Understanding at a deeper level that all that we do is fragile and impermanent … but we do it anyway because the doing is forever, somehow. The moment matters.
Thanks for the searching, Susan. For the doing. And the seeing.
