merrill morrison: tied up in knots

I’ve been a fan of Merrill Morrison’s work for quite some time so I was excited to discover that she now has a website to showcase her sculpture.  Using a traditional knotting technique employed by basket makers, Morrison creates fiber sculptures that are a delightful mix of vivid color, striking pattern and subtle texture.  Take a look at a few of my favorite pieces then go to her website for more. The email on Merrill’s site isn’t working yet, but you can reach the artist here: merrillmorrison(at)aol.com

Ireland’s Eily O’Connell, a 2008 graduate of the National College of Art and Design, crafts brooches and rings using cast silver, semi precious stones, wisdom teeth, found objects, cut glass and enamel. The jewelry has a rough, organic look – almost like it has been excavated from a dark, cave-like space and as the artist describes, they are “not quite as they appear.” The young artist is attracting quite a buzz and has already exhibited in Ireland, London and Japan.  More on the Klimt02 website.

Maria Elena Zuniga is a jewelry artist and teacher based in Chile. I can’t find much about her online and her website is in Spanish. I like what I see, though.  You too? If you have difficulty viewing the website, try her Flickr site.

Don’t stand around Jan Huling for too long.  She will bead you. The New Jersey based beadist and her intricately beaded, found object collages recently became part of a successful social experiment.
