jeremy may: bookish gems

Littlefly’s Jeremy May repurposes old books by laminating hundreds of sheets of paper together and then cutting the pages from each book in the shape of rings, pendants or pieces to be used in a bracelet. After the “Literary Jewels” are carefully finished, many of them go back into the space carved out of the book. The book becomes both packaging and material for the product. Love it.

I love May’s jewelry, and at the same time always feel a little twinge when a book is repurposed. What is it about books that it seems like they maybe have a little soul … or something? On the other hand, I recently saw a museum exhibit of books transformed into other art and it blew me away. If you see an exhibit at a local museum or gallery, go. You’ll love it.
Sweet idea! I really like how Jeremy is using the originating book as display/storage. The actual jewelry designs are ok, but I do love it when books are used in any form of art.
I get what Ronna is saying about that twinge (which is probably why I have never “destroyed” a book like that), but I also really love old books, and I think that if someone isn’t gonna read it, it should be “used” in any way possible. Heh… old books are awesome.
Wonderful. Thought it was Elke Kuhn’s polymer clay jewelry, which is ALL I wear!
Wonderful idea!
