I have several of the spools pictured. Mine came from a woolen mill in the south where I grew up….They used them to wind wool thread as they spun the roving into smaller and smaller threads to weave into cloth for the armed forces, mens woolen suits and the scraps were used by my family to make quilts that we slept under.
Yup Frances! These came from an old factory in Texas. I love them!
Are there more? Where can they be purchased?
I’m inspired, too!
these are really cool! such great colors and patterns! what a great splurge!!
I have similar ones that I got in South Carolina only mine have a flared base on one end. I use them for candle holders.
They are pirns used in the fly shuttles for weaving. Those have been fancied up a bit.
My mom was a seamstress for Pendelton Woolen Mills for years…we had tons of these spools over the years. Recently we had to put her in a home and sell her house…my stupid sisters threw the box of spools in the garbage!! OMG!! I used to have such fun making things out of them when I was a kid…needless to say, my sisters did not inherit the creativity gene I did!
