more good news: the apprenticeships begin!

Many thanks to everyone for the great response to my last post – between my Facebook profile, Facebook fan page and the post itself your comments let me know how you feel about DAM and about the redesign.  I’m wearing a big grin.  I’m still working out several bugs in the design and recovering from too many all-night marathon website-building-days so my posts will probably be late for the rest of this week – your patience is deeply appreciated.

I snapped this picture of Dina Varano (right) looking through the window of her shop as she was assisting a customer one evening. Varano’s beautiful little shop was so crowded I couldn’t get inside!

The other big news this week is that I am about to begin my first apprenticeship.  Remember this post last spring?  Well, since that time the idea has grown and evolved – over the next 18 months I will devote two days a week to 4-10 week apprenticeship gigs.  Next week I will visit Tim Tate, Michael Janis, Novie Trump and a few other Washington DC area artists who have expressed interest in having me come to their studios and when I can work out a housing arrangement (anybody know of one?) I will head down there for several weeks. But first I will start in Connecticut, working with jewelry artist Dina Varano (pictured above). I will, of course, take you along on my journey through blog posts and pictures. I am still looking for more artists to work with – it can be anywhere in the USA – drop me a line for consideration.

Flight

More to come soon regarding the apprenticeship, for now enjoy a few images of the area {click images to see large version}, taken on my walks each day as I absorb the local scene in this small Connecticut shoreline town. It is a little slice of heaven and I look forward to my time here – if you want to see more, I will regularly post pictures from my day-to-day life on my new tumblr blog: cap.tured.

dam – four years and counting!

Daily Art Muse is four years old this month and to celebrate I redesigned the website to more accurately reflect the tone and purpose of the site. DAM explores the global landscape of handcrafted excellence by showcasing the best in contemporary fine craft. The site inspires artists, designers and collectors worldwide and is frequently used as an educational resource in traditional classroom settings (high school and college) as well as online learning environments.
