anke hennig: textile jewelry

Sign up here to receive the DAM newsletter.

Gossamer threads of colored nylon and silk, ancient long-forgotten braiding techniques and the gentle manipulations of an artist come together seamlessly in this collection of jewelry made by Germany’s Anke Hennig.

By winding the flat braids of thread over and around themselves, Hennig is able to creates spiral of flowing, colorful, dimensional curves. The results are light, breezy and easy to wear.

“The underlying idea of my work is restricted to clear forms and the principle of sequences. Simple, flat braids are wound around and over themselves, to form a spiral and provide an unusual aesthetic in the third dimension. These pieces of jewelry have both appearance and a surface, making it hard to imagine their origin – a new interpretation of an ancient technique and an alliance of the traditional married to the innovative.” Anna Hennig

angela cunningham solo show @ vessels gallery

I was recently invited to attend a private dinner and artist talk at Vessels Gallery in Boston MA, celebrating the opening of ceramic artist Angela Cunningham’s solo show.  I have shared Angela’s work before on DAM so it was a thrill to see the work and hear her speak about the inspiration and process.

Images of all of the pieces in the show here.

“The imagery in my pieces is drawn largely from forms in nature. I am inspired by the seductive textures, elegant lines, and fertile energy of flowers. Fruits and vegetables fascinate me with their tantalizing colors, dense seed structure, and grotesque beauty. The human body enters here and there—the curve of hip, the softness of belly.” Angela Cunningham

Cunningham’s sculptures all but scream out to the viewer, begging to be touched. I was intrigued by her process – she often throws forms on the wheel and then aggressively distorts the perfectly defined forms, stacking or joining them to create the other-worldly sculptures inspired by the details found in nature.

Here are a few images from my evening at Vessels Gallery. Bobbie and Angela were gracious hosts, the conversation was lively, the food delicious, the art sublime. I recorded quite a bit of Angela’s talk, but unfortunately there was a problem with the recording and I could not include it in the slideshow. Trust me when I say she is articulate and passionate about her art. Kudos Angela – it is a grand show! The show runs through June 5th at Vessels Gallery in Boston, MA.

kvetoslava flora sekanova: emerging artist

Newsprint takes center stage in Kvetoslava Flora Sekanova’s collection of laminated paper jewelry.

Brooch, newsprint, silver, mixed media

Traditionally a humble material that quickly finds its way into recycling bins and dumpsters, Sekanova make an effort to return the newsprint back to its original stately form by treating the laminated paper to look like wood. After reshaping the newly formed material she combines it with silver to complete each piece.

Brooch, 2011, newsprint, silver, mixed media

Originally from communist Czechoslovakia, the artist moved to New Zealand and finished a 4 year Advance Diploma in Art and Craft in 2010 at the Hungry Creek School of Art. Her portfolio, while small as she continues to develop this work, includes the treasures seen here as well as several award-winning pieces. This emerging artist is one to watch.
